Former FBI Chief James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Lying Congress
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
His lawyer submitted the response representing him in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would try to have the legal matter thrown out for various causes including that his client, a critic of Donald Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was formally accused shortly after Donald Trump pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.
Judicial Process
At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative advised the judge they planned to file multiple petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a legal hearing, arguing the government's case was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to handle the proceedings.
Mr Comey's legal matter was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under scrutiny from Trump after his investigation into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.
Legal Setting
Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was supported by his spouse, his wife and offspring Maureen, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.
After listening to the judge recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the accusations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.
Historical Information
James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about a few months into Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the presidential campaign.
Throughout his leadership, the director caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just days before the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Current Allegations
Prosecutors assert Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he provided false information to the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the agency to release to media organizations details about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also accuse the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.
Public Statements
Via social media James Comey posted to his online platform after he was charged, he declared he was not guilty and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".
"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."
These allegations against Mr Comey emerged after the former president posted on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
