Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Against Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-match ODI series versus India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected selection.
Recent Form Lead to Omission
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad following scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia look for a answer to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
