Significant Online Failure Affects Many Sites and Apps

A large-scale web outage has impacted dozens online platforms and mobile apps worldwide, with users noting issues connecting to the web following issues at the web hosting system.

The disrupted services encompass Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-managed platforms including its key e-commerce website and the Ring security doorbell company.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was disrupted in addition to its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were further notifications of difficulties reaching the the tax authority online portal on the start of the week. Also in the UK, several Ring users turned to online platforms to state their security devices were not working.

In the UK alone, reports of problems on particular platforms reached the many thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the problem began in the Atlantic coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a section that provides essential web infrastructure for numerous firms, who rent out space on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive web hosting system.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “elevated problem frequencies and latencies” for the cloud services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The cascading impact appeared to disrupt platforms globally, with the Downdetector site showing problems with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks internet outages, further indicated a rise in problems on that morning, with many of them located in Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the issues began.
